Moving and Storage Tips for Large Families

While I am the stay-at-home mother of six beautiful children, my husband works in a field that requires us to move frequently. The first time we had to move, it was just the two of us, and while it seemed stressful at the time, that ended up being the "easy" move! As our family has grown, the moving process has become much more time-intensive, and I learned that if I don't create a moving "to-do" list and go through it step by step, I forget to get important things done before we move. I know there are other families of all sizes out there facing moves soon, so I thought I would make a blog to share my moving and storage tips with everyone who needs them. Come back often, especially if you are moving in the near future!

6 Important Considerations When Renting A Storage Unit

Liam Morales

If you need to rent a storage unit, there are a few things you need to take into consideration as you select the best storage unit facility to work with. Thinking through the rental process will help ensure your belongings are safe and that your needs are met.

Consideration #1: Facility Security

First, you need to find out how the self-storage unit keeps things secure. Do they have a 24-hour video monitoring system? Do they have an electronic gate with keypad or key fob access for people who are renting a unit? Is there always someone on-site?

Make sure the facility you are renting the storage unit takes the overall security of the facility seriously. A secure facility will help keep your belongs secure.

Consideration #2: Access Hours

Second, you need to consider when you need to access the storage unit. If you have limited hours to access the storage unit, you will want to make sure that the facility is open during those hours. Some facilities have limited hours, so make sure they work with your hours.

Consideration #3: Pest Control

Third, ask the facility how they handle pest control. Pests can be damaging to your belongings, and you want to put your belongings in a facility that will be proactive about keeping rodents and insects away.

Consideration #4: Unit Size And Access

Fourth, be sure to find out what size units they have available. It is a good idea to get a unit at a facility where you can upgrade your unit if necessary.

You need to also think about how you can access the unit. If you have huge items you need to store, you may want a storage unit with outside access. If you have sensitive items you need to keep, like electronics, you may want a storage facility that offers climate-controlled units.

Consideration #5: Storage Restrictions

Fifth, find out if they have any restrictions regarding what you can store on-site. Most storage facilities will not allow you to keep living things, food, and hazardous materials on-site. Some facilities may have more specific rules; make sure nothing you need to store isn't allowed at that facility.

Consideration #6: Insurance

Sixth, find out if the facility offers storage for your belongings. Some facilities work with companies that will provide insurance for your belongings. If your belongings are not covered by your homeowner's or a rental insurance policy, you will want to make sure you have another way to protect them.

When it comes to finding the right rental facility, be sure to ask detailed questions so you can find the best facility for storing your goods that will keep your goods secure and safe while making them easy for you to access. If you need a storage unit rental, talk to a facility near you.
